ABOUT LIME TREE´S OWNER, JEREMY LAW
I have always loved good food. Growing up in England, on Sundays my mum used to produce a roast with everything miraculously hot and cooked to perfection. Wednesday’s dinner, after soccer practice, was tuna-fish pie and Star Trek. A big treat was steak & kidney pie, baked with one of those pottery creatures in the middle of the pie so it could breathe. Or for really grand occasions, my mum would make Albondigas, a Spanish meatball dish made with saffron and peppers. But whatever we were given, dinner was always a delicious, rowdy, noisy, fun and conversational affair.
Fast forward to 2006, after a career in computers, I set off on a sailing cruise with my family of four to see the world. The life of a yacht cruiser involves less sailing than one would expect, and much more social interaction with sailors from all over the world. Sharing stories & experiences over shared food and shared wine became a way of life for us all.
When we ended up in Southern Chile and decided to stay, working with food was the only thing I could imagine doing. So when a once-famous, 7-table restaurant situated on a small incline overlooking the sea came up for sale, I bought my very own restaurant called Fogón de Cotelé, where dinners were always a rowdy, conversational affair, centred around good steak and good wine. When I bought it they served three cuts of steak, a boiled potato and two typical Chilean salads. The meat was cooked on the fogón (braai) in the centre of the restaurant, which made it very cosy in the long winters. It was perfect for me. It was a great success once we cleaned it up and added a few gringo things to the menu, with even the Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet, coming to us for dinner.
Returning to South Africa in 2018, I started the search for a restaurant to buy and along came Lime Tree Café. At our undercover lunch to check the place out, the awesome taste of the mussels and the lamb burger convinced me that this was to be my next adventure. And the rest is history. My 7th anniversary of ownership of Lime Tree Café comes up on 1st of May this year.
And together, we´re still going strong. Thank you for being here with us.
